San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 13, 2012

Many returning veterans and Americans suffer from undiagnosed mental health conditions that can, without detection and intervention, lead to increasing strains on society. According to the most recent study of mental heath costs, the NIMH estimates healthcare accounted for 16% of the nation’s GDP in 2006 ($ 2.1 Trillion) with mental disorders accounting for an estimated 6.2% ($ 131.7 Billion)[1]. This figure does not account for “indirect costs” such as crime, homelessness, and welfare. With healthcare costs rising to 17.7% of the nation’s GDP in 2011 [2], London’s Department of Health concluded that early detection and prevention can help combat the increasing costs of mental illness, yielding significant long and short term savings [3].

After a decade of war, service men and women face a myriad of internal wounds. In the veteran population, 30% of troops face a mental problem within four months of returning home [4] with “lower-bound health care costs” of PTSD alone reaching $ 1.5 to $ 2.7 billion [5]. Beyond dollars and the individual sufferer, mental illness can devastate families and communities. Detecting and understanding the signs of mental illness before they escalate is vital to our troops and nation. To help address this need, Symptom Media recently released a series of diagnostic videos covering a variety of military topics.

Each film, guided by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR), offers visual guideposts to clinical diagnoses, dramatically augmenting the standard written descriptions. Unlike instructional videos or documentaries that focus on telling information, Symptom Media’s videos show the symptoms unfolding, inviting viewer participation, interpretation, analysis and discussion. The range of symptoms can be as nuanced as an actual patient or more pronounced for easy understanding. Maintaining a high standard of clinical accuracy, a multi-disciplinary behavioral health team collaborates with professional filmmakers and actors in all aspects of film production.

Kevin Marrone, a professor of psychology at Webster University, uses Symptom Media in his graduate level clinical training. He finds the videos help his students “make sense out of the diagnostic criteria that they had been reading about in their DSM.” By utilizing this visual aid, his students could now “not only tell me what a major depressive episode was but could visually describe it and recognize it.” Instead of acquiring these recognition skills over a long period of time in front of patients, students are equipped with this knowledge upon leaving the classroom.

Behind the performances, Symptom Media employs a variety of professional actors, including those personally touched by the conditions they portray. Robert Leohnard, who participated in a fictionalized Symptom Media vignette, served 12 months in Iraq as a convoy escort near Nassiria. Diagnosed with PTSD, Robert experiences first-hand the effects of panic attacks and flashbacks as a result of his time overseas.

With the help of treatment, Robert continues his successful career as an actor and lawyer, providing pro bono legal services to veterans. Drawing from his experiences with PTSD, Robert adds another layer of realism and texture to his performance. When seen through the lens of a clinician, Robert’s vignette demonstrates “immature coping mechanisms with severe anger… wishing to reverse events by seeking violent revenge, otherwise labeled as ‘acting out.’” To watch a sample of Robert’s Symptom Media PTSD film please view the embedded video above or go to Symptom Media’s sample film page.

Spearheading this new initiative is Dr. Donald Fidler, recently retired endowed Chair of Psychiatry at West Virginia University with over 30 years of clinical experience. Simultaneous to his psychiatric work, Dr. Fidler pursued his other passions: screenwriting, acting, filmmaking, and teaching drama. During this dual career, Dr. Fidler successfully fused the two fields, using the inner workings of psychiatry to train his acting students, and using actors and drama to train his psychiatry students and residents.

Early symptom recognition supports prevention and intervention, resulting in the most hopeful opportunity for needed services and realized cost savings. Symptom Media’s newly released military series represents one way to enhance and improve behavioral health training, detection and symptom recognition within our military and veteran populations.

St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) January 18, 2012

The recent cruise ship tragedy has travelers questioning whether travel insurance will provide reimbursement if they decide to cancel an upcoming cruise. According to Squaremouth.com, a site for comparing and purchasing travel insurance, it’s important for travelers to understand whether their travel insurance adequately protects them in the event they want to cancel. “While looking for a travel insurance policy, travelers should consider whether they are content with being able cancel for limited reasons, such as health and weather, or if they want the option to cancel if they are concerned a similar accident could happen on their cruise ship,” says Sarah Byrne, Marketing Manager at Squaremouth.

“Since cancelling for fear of a similar situation happening isn’t covered under the standard Trip Cancellation benefit, travelers will want to look for policies with the Cancel for Any Reason benefit,” advises Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth. Unlike Trip Cancellation, Cancel for Any Reason allows someone to cancel the trip without explanation, and receive a refund up to 75 percent of the trip cost. However, to qualify for this benefit, travelers must purchase a travel insurance policy within 14-30 days of the initial deposit payment.

“Most travel insurance programs do not provide coverage under the Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefits for events similar to the recent cruise ship loss since it was caused by the cruise line,” explains Bill Dismore, Executive Vice President at iTravelInsured. For coverage to be available, the cause of the event would have to be listed under the qualified reasons for reimbursement within the travel insurance policy. This type of situation is not listed under most policies.

In the event a travelers’ cruise is interrupted, Squaremouth encourages them to contact their travel insurance provider to see what type of coverage is available. “While CSA’s policies vary slightly in exact coverage, for this type of event the majority offer coverage and assistance for emergency medical treatment, evacuation, baggage loss and costs incurred due to finding new lodging,” explains Kathy Townend, CSA Travel Protection’s Marketing Manager.

Travelers are also reminded that each travel insurance policy comes with an emergency assistance number. Not only can they assist someone in a medical emergency, but they can help arrange an emergency cash transfer, language interpretation services, travel documents replacements, emergency messaging services and transportation services.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 03, 2012

Procter & Gamble’s oral care division is now a partner in the discount program offered to dentists in the Dearborn National Dental Network. Dentists will now be offered discounts on several bundles of oral care regimens to help their members maintain oral hygiene.

Each bundle is geared toward assisting members with overall oral hygiene and fighting plaque through the coupling of mechanical action and chemical action.

To provide well-rounded oral care, the bundles target various conditions or desired outcomes. The Clinical PRO-HEALTH SYSTEM for Gingivitis was clinically tested to virtually eliminate gingivitis, per Procter & Gamble. This package includes the Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 Electric Toothbrush with SmartGuide, Pro-Health Toothpaste, Pro-Health Rinse and Oral-B Glide Floss.

The oscillating-rotating and pulsating movement of the Procter & Gamble power brushes loosens plaque. The chemical action embedded within the regimen is from the stabilized stannous fluoride in Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste which inhibits the metabolic activity of destructive bacteria, and, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) found in Crest Pro-Health Rinse which inhibits the regrowth of plaque biofilm to provide the chemical action. According to the company, twice daily use of Crest Pro-Health toothpaste and rinse is proven to help prevent plaque regrowth.

Other bundles offered are the “OrthoEssentials” bundle, whitening bundles and regular plaque fighting oral care bundles. All bundles include Procter & Gamble’s Oral-B oscillating-rotating toothbrush technology.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance our relationships with dentists in our network, and are delighted to offer them a very attractive array of specially priced products from a well-respected company, such as Procter & Gamble,” said Mike Miller, head of the dental network division for Dearborn National.

The partner discount program—MaxPlus—offers dentists in the Dearborn National Dental Network savings on a wide variety of products and services that include discounts on office products and services, dental lab services, billing software, credit card processing, and more.

With more than 221,000 dental access points, Dearborn National offers employers deep and flexible dental contracts while providing employees with exceptional customer service and a comprehensive dental wellness program.
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

In situations when everyday communications won’t work, Satworx will. Satworx, a global provider of satellite telephone equipment and services for extreme communication and disaster preparedness, has teamed up with Yukon Quest to provide the 1,000 mile Alaskan dog race event with a communication solution. Satworx-backed services will be the safety net for race officials to handle event logistics and health and security needs for hundreds of athlete dogs and people participating in the race. Without any type of communication, the dogs and mushers must be prepared for the unusually cold temperatures of -40F/-40C and checkpoints that are as far as 200 miles apart. For the rugged conditions the Yukon Quest officials will endure, they are dependent on Satworx’ secure and reliable satellite phone service in remote and out-of-touch areas, serving as an on-hand life insurance policy to keep the officials, mushers and dogs out of harm’s way in dangerous and unpredictable circumstances.

“Because of the geographical challenges of Alaska, for this implementation, we built our solution around the Iridium network to ensure the most dependable communications for the teams and safety protection for dog athletes and their mushers,” says Sean McCready, Satworx Marketing Director.

“Our official personnel, working on the trail and working in these remote settings, have little more than a warm change of clothes, a good sleeping bag, their learned survival skills, and a Satworx Satellite phone to protect and assist them in getting help in the event of a mechanical failure or accident on the trail,” explains Josh Horst, 2012 Yukon Quest Race Manager. “It is imperative in this modern era that our people are equipped with phones and service that will always perform.”

About Satworx

Satworx is a leading global satellite communication company offering globally reliable phones (hardware) and services (connection and consulting), using the market’s most advanced hardware choices and contemporary satellite configuration for the needs of individuals, corporate clientele and government subscribers around the world.
WPS is Wisconsin’s leading not-for-profit health insurer.

Madison, WI (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 brings sweeping changes to health insurance coverage in the United States, including the requirement that new health plans—both group and individual—pay 100% of the costs of certain preventive care services such as mammograms, colonoscopies, blood pressure checks, and childhood immunizations. WPS Health Insurance, Wisconsin’s leading not-for-profit health insurer and provider of affordable group and individual health insurance, examines this new requirement and details the specific covered services for adults, women, and children in a new educational article, “Stay Healthy, Save Money with Preventive Services Covered at 100% Under Health Care Reform,” available for free from the WPS online Learning Center.

“Getting regular preventive care is the single most important thing Wisconsin residents can do to protect their health,” said Dr. Marvin Wiener, Senior Medical Director at WPS Health Insurance. “Yet today, only about half of all Americans get the preventive care they need. That’s unfortunate when you consider that chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths among Americans each year—and they are often preventable.”

Under the Affordable Care Act, all group and individual health plans that take effect on or after September 23, 2010 are required to cover recommended preventive care services without charging a copayment, deductible, or coinsurance, so long as the services are received from an in-network health care provider.

“Doctors and health care facilities continue to charge for these services. But now it’s the health insurance companies that pay the costs,” said Dr. Wiener. “Essentially, preventive care becomes ‘free’ for the policyholder, greatly increasing the incentive to take advantage of these services.”

Depending on the policyholder’s age, covered preventive care services may include:

Blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol tests
Many types of cancer screenings, including mammograms and colonoscopies
Routine vaccinations against diseases such as measles, polio, influenza (flu), and meningitis
Counseling, screening, and vaccines to ensure healthy pregnancies
Regular well-baby and well-child visits from birth to age 21

The full article includes a complete list of preventive care services covered for adults, women, and children, as well as additional details about the new rules.

WPS encourages individuals and families looking for more health insurance tips and strategies to check out the WPS Learning Center for free articles on controlling costs, preventing illness, making wise health decisions, and other timely topics.
